Sexual Abuse Treatment
Overview
Since its inception in 1987, the Sexual
Abuse Treatment Program has helped more than 2,000 children and
non-offending family members in Schenectady County heal from the
damaging effects of child sexual abuse. The program’s goal is to reduce
the trauma experienced by each family member, and to help the family
adjust and reorganize in a manner to help ensure the healthy development
and ongoing protection of the child.

Referrals
The Sexual Abuse Treatment Program receives
referrals exclusively through the Schenectady County Department of
Social Services for families who meet the following criteria:
* Disclosure by the child that he or she has
been sexually abused
* Evidence of trauma, usually expressed in symptoms or behaviors
* Desire by the non-offending parent to seek help
* Motivation by the non-offending parent to protect and support the
child, and to end the cycle of sexual abuse
Benefits
* The child is sufficiently
empowered to keep himself or herself safe by knowing when to say no, get
away or tell an adult.
* The child has an understanding of what has happened and does not blame
himself or herself for the abusive actions.
* The degree of trauma is significantly decreased as demonstrated by a
cessation of symptoms or troublesome behavior.
* The non-offending parent is able to support the child and demonstrates
an ability to protect the child from further abuse.
* Parents and siblings also receive therapeutic services.
