Overview

A child’s emotional health and well-being plays a key role in determining his or her success in school, ability to get along with others, and ability to deal with the challenges of growing up. The Child Guidance Center offers children and families help in managing their emotional well-being and assistance in resolving issues that may cause impaired emotional/behavioral functioning and psychiatric difficulties.

The Child Guidance Center is a New York State Office of Mental Health licensed Outpatient Treatment Program. The Center strives to ensure that quality therapeutic services are readily available to all children and families identified as needing care and treatment.

Services

* Emotional well-being screenings and assessment
* Comprehensive mental health treatment services aimed at addressing difficulties including:
          * Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
          * Anxiety disorders
          * Depression
          * Trauma
          * Mood, Adjustment, and Oppositional Defiant Disorders
* Individual therapy
* Family therapy
* Psychiatric evaluation
* Medication review and management
* Psychological assessment
* Psychoeducational groups for parents
* Coordination with other service providers, schools, and primary care physicians

Referrals

Any Schenectady County resident under age 18 who is having trouble functioning at home, in school, or in the community due to emotional and/or behavioral difficulties may be referred to the Child Guidance Center for assessment and treatment with parental consent.

Emotional well-being screenings are regularly offered in a variety of community settings including health care facilities, schools, and the Departments of Social Services and Probation.

The Center is a fee-for-service program. We accept a variety of payment methods, including Medicaid, some third party insurance, and private payment on a sliding scale.
