County Receives $750,000 New York State Community Development Block
Grant Towards the Construction of Career (Schenectady, N.Y.) – The Schenectady County Legislature today announced that the County has received a $750,000 New York State Community Development Block Grant (NYS CDBG) toward the establishment of the Career Development Center for youth in Schenectady. The center is a partnership of Schenectady County's Youth Bureau, the Department of Economic Development and Planning, and Northeast Parent and Child Society. Susan Savage, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature said, “We want to thank Governor Paterson and the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal for this very important grant. This award is a great example of how Schenectady County is partnering with local community organizations to bring needed State and Federal funding to Schenectady County to invest in our young people.” The Career Development Center will be a state-of-the-art facility providing job skills training to Schenectady County residents aged 18 to 24 who are low to moderate income individuals, who either did not finish high school or finished high school but are having trouble finding a job in the work place where the emphasis is increasingly on skilled individuals. Participants will receive intensive job training assistance in high demand occupations including computers, digital imaging, emergency medical technician, graphics, construction, brownfield remediation and others. The NYS CDBG funding will be targeted to assist at-risk youth in the five towns of Schenectady County. Ed Kosiur, Special Assistant to the Commissioner of Social Services for Youth Development said, “The Schenectady County Youth Bureau is proud of the partnership with Northeast Parent & Child Society. This program will be a model for others around the state as we help disadvantaged youth get back on the track toward a productive life.” Dr. Peter F. Stoll, Northeast’s Vice President of Career Development said, “Northeast Parent & Child Society recognized the need to provide career services to at-risk youth in the townships and villages throughout Schenectady County. We are delighted that the Community Development Block Grant will allow us to help these young people support themselves, their families and their community.” The Career Development Center will be located on the first floor of Northeast Parent & Child Society's recently renovated office building at 530 Franklin Street.
